Police chief: Shooter dead after parishioners return fire during service - WAOW

WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas —

Church members stopped a shooter during an attack at a church Sunday in Texas, the state's governor said.

TV stations reported that two people were killed amid a shooting at West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, near Fort Worth. One person died at the scene and another died on the way to the hospital, according to KXAS-TV. A third person person was critically injured, KTVT reported.

"Our hearts go out to the victims and families of those killed in the evil act of violence that occurred at the West Freeway Church of Christ," Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement. "Places of worship are meant to be sacred, and I am grateful for the church members who acted quickly to take down the shooter and help prevent further loss of life."

White Settlement police Chief J.P. Bevering said the shooter entered the church during the service, but heroic parishioners returned fire. The suspect died at the scene, Bevering said.
An elder at the church told The New York Times that one of those killed was a security guard who responded to the shooter, calling him a dear friend.

"He was trying to do what he needed to do to protect the rest of us," said the elder, Mike Tinius.

The shooter is dead, one victim is dead and another victim has been transported to the hospital, @FOX4 has learned. The ages between the three range from 30-60 years old. Multiple agencies responding to the scene.

NEW: Scene outside of West Freeway Church of Christ where at least three people have reportedly been shot, two dead (including the shooter). Law enforcement is requesting media stay back from the scene.

"It’s extremely upsetting to see anyone committing violence," he added.

Tinius said he didn't know the gunman and that the shooting appeared to be random.

"No one should be subjected to gunfire in a house of worship. Our hearts go out to those affected by the tragedy in White Settlement today," U.S. Attorney Erin Nealy Cox said. "Details of the shooter are currently under investigation."

This is a developing story.
